Don’t Let HVAC Contractors Take Advantage of You

Let’s face it; a new air conditioner can be a big investment. No homeowner wants to pick a brand that might not hold up for the long run. It can be a challenge to sort through all the different AC brands and choose the right one because there are many variables to consider. What is the life expectancy, is it energy efficient, how much will it cost, or how much will it cost to maintain? That’s a lot to consider, so we built this guide to help homeowners make the most informed decision on the best air conditioner brands available in the US.

Most Popular Air Conditioner Brands In America

Seeing what homeowners are buying throughout the US is one indicator of the best AC brands on the market. These are the top 6 most sought-after and purchased AC brands by homeowners in the US.

#1 Trane

Trane HVAC company brand logo

Trane is one of the most sought-after and trusted air conditioner brands in the US by homeowners. Is that because they have the best air conditioner or have a good marketing team? The answer is a bit of both. Trane does manufacture some of the best equipment in the industry that has helped build its reputation. Trane is owned by Ingersoll Rand, who also oversees the production of a few lesser know air conditioning brands. We primarily sell Carrier as our flagship, but we service thousands of Trane systems. So, if you are asking, is Trane a good brand? There is no way you can go wrong with a Trane. Trane is one of my top picks for the best central air conditioner systems for homeowners in 2021.

#2 Carrier

Carrier heating and air conditioning company logo

Carrier is right behind Trane on what homeowners are looking to put into their homes. Carrier was first founded in 1915 and run by Carrier Global Corporation. One of the significant advantages they have over other brands is their amount of experience. With over 100 years of experience, they have been able to work out most of the bugs and flaws in air conditioning which has propelled them to be one of the most reliable AC brands in the US. They are owned by United Technologies who also manufactures lesser know similar brands like Bryant and Payne. If you are asking, is Carrier AC good? The short answer is, Carrier is one of the best air conditioner brands available on the market. As you are shopping for the best HVAC system, I would add Carrier to your list as one of the top 10 air conditioner brands.

#3 Goodman

Goodman Manufacturing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning company logo

Goodman has recently become extremely popular. In the last ten years, Goodman has made a big comeback as the low-cost air conditioning solution. Goodman was mismanaged for many years until bought by Daikin in 2012. Daikin invested heavily into R&D and manufacturing turning around the Goodman name. Goodman has strived to become one of the cheapest best air conditioner brands while maintaining good quality. If you are asking, is Goodman a good AC brand? They are widely considered by many to be the best budget-friendly brand available. Goodman should be on top of your list for the best budget-friendly option.

#4 Lennox

Lennox HVAC company logo

Lennox is still extremely popular among people looking for a luxury air conditioner system. Quick disclaimer: This is our experience working on hundreds of Lennox AC systems in Texas. It is normal for us to do major repairs and full system changeouts on Lennox systems that are only five years old. Here in San Antonio and Austin, TX, Lennox’s are expensive to purchase and maintain. Many people consider Lennox the Mercedes of air conditioning, so the cost and maintenance come with the territory. If you are asking, is Lennox a good AC? I would have a hard time recommending them for the Texas heat, but they might work better in your state; ask your local HVAC companies near you to see what they say.

#5 Rheem

Rheem HVAC company logo

Number 5 on the list of brands homeowners are seeking out is Rheem. Rheem is one of the largest water heating and HVAC equipment manufacturers. Overall, Rheem is a great air conditioning brand and pretty reliable. The company first opened its door in 1925. The parent company that is over Rheem is Paloma Industries. If you are considering a new Rheem AC, find a Rheem dealer for the installation. A Rheem AC heat pump is manufactured differently from other brands and can stump an install team unfamiliar with the brand. If you are questioning, is Rheem a good AC? I lean a little more to Carrie or Trane, but Rheem is a great brand, and you can’t go wrong with Rheem HVAC.

AC Brands Manufactured by Rheem Manufacturing Company

  • Rheem
  • Ruud

#6 York

The last major brand homeowners are looking for is York. York has a pretty big footprint in the commercial sector because the parent company is Johnson Controls. York is a sound air conditioner system with very little negative said about them. There is not a lot of demand for York AC systems in our area, so we do not get good customer support. I would recommend finding out if York is prevalent in your area to ensure they can properly support your installation. In our experience, Yorks is a good system, and we don’t have many problems with them.

AC Brands Manufactured by Johnson Controls

  • York
  • Luxaire
  • Coleman

Highest Quality AC Brands

The highest quality HVAC brands are not always the most popular. American Standard is a good starting point if you are looking for the best air conditioner maintaining the highest quality.

Top 3 Best Quality AC Brand in America

  1. American Standard (Under the Trane line-up)
  2. Comfortmaker (Under the Carrier line-up)
  3. Daikin (Under the Goodman line-up)
2 ac units

#1 American Standard

American Standard heating and air conditioning company logo

Is American Standard a good brand? American Standard is widely considered the topmost reliable air conditioner on the market. American Standard is not all that different from Trane; as a matter of fact, they are manufactured on the same assembly line. The reason American Standard gets a leg up over Trane is consumer reports put American Standard slightly ahead of Trane’s air conditioner. However, if you are on the fence between Trane or American Standard, I wouldn’t worry too much about the equipment but the company you consider for the installation.

#2 Comfortmaker

Comfortmaker air conditioning and heating company logo

You might be asking, “how is it that Comfortmaker is more reliable than Carrier even though the same group makes them?” Comfortmaker is by far a lesser-known air conditioner, but one major factor separates it from a Carrier. Carrier and Comfortmaker are pretty much the same things, but when changes are made to the technology, it is first rolled out under the Carrier name, and any bugs are worked out during the first few years. Only after all the bugs are worked out will the Comfortmaker name embrace the technology. So with Comfortmaker, there are no bugs that ever need to be worked through because the Carrier name already did.

#3 Daikin

Daikin HVAC company logo

Daikin is one of America’s most underrated air conditioners because they are not well known. Daikin also manufactures Goodman, but the Daikin name is the premium brand. Most homeowners aren’t familiar with this brand because the Daikin name primarily makes commercial equipment. Commercial grade equipment has to run longer and harder than residential. Unlike the other two air conditioner brands on this list, Daikin is far better equipment than their flagship brand, Goodman. If you are looking around for a quality AC, you might want to add Daikin to your list.

Best And Cheapest Air Conditioner Brands

High-quality AC units and cost-effective air conditioners do not vary significantly, so many homeowners opt for the most budget-friendly option. Goodman is generally on top of everyone’s list for the best low-cost AC system.

Top 3 Best & Cheapest AC Brands

  1. Goodman – Complete System $4,100 to $15,000
  2. York – Complete System $5,100 to $15,000
  3. Payne – Complete System $5,100 to $15,000

#1 Goodman

Goodman Manufacturing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning company logo

Goodman puts a lot of effort into keeping a system change out cost as low as possible. Goodman’s largest markets focus on multi-family and rental properties. The ideal application for a Goodman is in places where it isn’t easy to perform proper maintenance, like in a rental home or apartment. That way, they can be used and abused without spending any more than you have to. Another application for Goodman is when a homeowner plans to move in the next ten years. Since an air conditioner brand does not change the value of your home, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to overspend on a new air conditioner.

#2 York

York is a good mid-entry HVAC system. Many other HVAC contractors have told me that the pricing is pretty close to a Goodman system. However, I don’t have much experience installing York air conditioners because they are not very popular in our area. We do repair York systems, and I don’t have anything bad to say about their AC systems. York is worth considering if you are looking into the best-priced air conditioner systems.

#3 Payne

Payne heating and cooling company logo

Payne is designed and marked as a cost-effective air conditioner solution under the Carrier line. Payne is a sound AC system because it is similar to a Carrier. One of the only downsides to a Payne is not the equipment but the local support. Since Payne is a lesser-known brand, there is a chance there may not be that many suppliers and installers in your area, which could lead to poor service when you need it. If you find a local contractor that uses Payne as their primary AC brand, they would be able to take good care of you.

Most Energy Efficient Air Conditioner Brands

If you are looking for the top energy-efficient brands on the market, Lennox, Amana, and Carrier are all good options.

Top 3 most energy efficient aC brands

  1. Lennox – Up to 26 Seer
  2. Amana – Up to 24.5 Seer
  3. Carrier – Up to 22 Seer

#1 Lennox

Lennox HVAC company logo

Lennox is considered by many as the luxury brand of air conditioning. The Lennox XC25 delivers an astounding 26 SEER rating, beating out all competitors. They also have all the bells and whistles and are the most energy-efficient air conditioner on the market. However, all the bells and whistles come at a price, making Lennox the most expensive air conditioner system on the market. Not only is it the most expensive system, but it has more parts to break, and they do. Most people with Lennox air conditioners have more than one system on their home, so it’s not too big of a deal if one goes down. If you are looking for the top-of-the-line, most energy-efficient AC, Lennox might be your go-to.

#2 Amana

Amana heating and air conditioning company logo

Amana is the upper-end arm of the Goodman brand and is a great system. The Amana AVXC20 delivers a 24.5 SEER rating making it the runner-up to Lennox. An Amana is a more budget-friendly option than the Lennox; however, it will not come with all the bells and whistles. Since Amana systems don’t have as many moving parts, it is a little more durable than a Lennox. One of the downsides to a high-end variable speed system they require routine maintenance to make sure everything is working correctly.

#3 Carrier

Carrier heating and air conditioning company logo

Not only is Carrier one of the most reliable air conditioner brands on the market they also have one of the most energy-efficient systems. Their Infinity Greenspeed air conditioner can reach an efficiency rating as high as 22 SEER. They don’t have quite as high SEER ratings as the other two systems, but they still make our top 3 most efficient air conditioner brands.

Top 10 Air Conditioner Brands

A quick disclaimer about our opinion: We are an air conditioner company in Texas that works on and replaces thousands of air conditioners every year. We primarily supply Carrier and Goodman for our replacements. We chose these two brands based on vendor support and how well the product performs in Texas. Keep in mind, however, that availability and quality may vary in your area.

How we rate each brand: We service thousands of AC systems each year, giving us a good idea of which brands are the most reliable, easiest to maintain with the fewest repairs and last the longest before needing to be replaced. 1) Reliability 2) Fewest repairs 3) Replacement costs

Best Air Conditioner Brands

In our list of top 10 air conditioner brands, you might have noticed that we didn’t put our flagship brand, Carrier, as number one on the list. We’ve found that the all-aluminum Spine-Fin coils Trane uses in their AC units perform slightly better than the standard copper coils used by other HVAC brands, putting Trane ahead of Carrier. We don’t push Trane as our number one AC brand due to our location. Trane has poor customer support in our service area, which drove us to use Carrier. When weighing out all the different brand options, I recommend using a brand prevalent in your area. If the best AC brand has a small local presence in your area, you may not want to use them. It doesn’t matter how good an AC system is if you can’t get parts to service it.
