Signs Your San Antonio Home Needs a New AC System

Your AC unit will not quit with no warning one day. It gives hints for months, sometimes years. Most homeowners in San Antonio do not notice these signs because the system still turns on and blows air. “Running” and “working right” are not the same thing.

Age is the biggest sign. Most residential systems last 12 to 15 years in moderate climates. San Antonio is not moderate. Our summers push units hard from May through October, sometimes longer. This kind of heat stress shortens equipment life. If your system is over 10 years old and needs frequent repairs, it is telling you something.

Here is what we see on service calls:
  • Rooms that do not cool evenly, even after duct cleaning and filter changes.
  • The system runs constantly, but your house stays at 78 degrees or higher.
  • Your electric bill jumped 20 to 30 percent compared to the same month last year.
  • Strange sounds at startup – grinding, rattling, or a loud bang when the compressor turns on.

Refrigerant often catches homeowners off guard. Older systems use R-22 Freon, which has been phased out. If your unit still runs on R-22, a single recharge can cost more than it is worth. You will also need another one because the leak does not fix itself. This is a clear indicator it is time for AC installation instead of another repair.

We also check the evaporator and condenser coils during inspections. Corroded coils in an older unit are not worth replacing. The labor alone makes it a poor investment when the rest of the system is also wearing down.

Short cycling is another warning sign. This happens when the system turns on, runs for a few minutes, shuts off, then starts again. It drives up your electric bill and puts serious strain on the compressor. Often, by the time a compressor fails on an older unit, the repair quote is high enough that replacement makes more sense.

Not every problem means you need a new system. If your unit is under 8 years old and the issue is a capacitor, contactor, or a clogged condensate drain, a repair is usually the right call. We will tell you that directly during a free estimate. Visit our San Antonio AC services page for more information.

Repair vs. Replacement: Making the Right Call

This is the most common question we get. Your AC stopped cooling on a 100-degree afternoon in San Antonio. Now you are wondering if it makes sense to fix what you have or install something new. There is no single answer, but clear indicators will guide you.

Age matters more than many people think. Most residential AC systems in San Antonio last 12 to 18 years. Our summers push units hard, sometimes running 14 hours a day from May through October. This wear shortens equipment lifespan. If your system is under 10 years old and the repair is simple, fixing it usually makes sense. A failed capacitor or a bad contactor does not mean the whole system is ruined.

However, if you are looking at a compressor replacement on a 14-year-old unit, that is a different discussion. You would be making a large investment into equipment nearing the end of its useful life. We see this often: homeowners spend a lot on a repair, then face another failure six months later.

Here is a general guideline we share with homeowners. Take the repair cost and multiply it by the system’s age. If that number is close to or higher than the cost of a new AC installation, replacement is the smarter choice. It is not a perfect formula, but it helps keep emotions out of the decision.

A few other things to think about:

  • R-22 refrigerant systems cannot be recharged at a reasonable cost anymore since production ended in 2020.
  • Frequent repairs over the past two years show a system in decline.
  • Uneven cooling or high electric bills often mean the equipment cannot keep up with your home’s demand.

Are you unsure where your system falls? This is common. We offer free estimates, and we do not have salespeople on staff. Our NATE-certified technicians will walk you through what they find and let you decide. You can even compare AC system costs on our website before scheduling a visit. We believe a well-educated homeowner makes the best decision for their family. If a repair gives you five more solid years, we will tell you that. If your system is done, we will explain why so you can understand it yourself.

When a Simple Repair Is All You Need

Not every AC problem means you need a new system. This is an important point to remember.

Atlas AC Repair Technician servicing Condenser

We get calls all summer from San Antonio homeowners who believe their unit is dead. The house reached 85 degrees inside, the system will not turn on, and they are already worried about a full AC replacement. Often, the fix is simple. A failed capacitor. A locked-up contactor. A tripped safety switch. These parts wear out in our heat. They do not mean the whole system is beyond repair. We handle AC repair and AC troubleshooting calls like these every week during peak season.

Here is what you should check before assuming the worst:

  • Your thermostat is set correctly and has fresh batteries.
  • The breaker at your electrical panel has not tripped.
  • Your air filter is not completely clogged with dust and pet hair.
  • The outdoor unit is not buried under debris or overgrown landscaping.

A clogged filter often causes a system to freeze up and stop cooling. San Antonio’s long cooling season means filters get dirty quickly. If you have not changed yours in three months, start there.

When does a repair stop making sense? If your system is over 15 years old and the repair involves a major component like a compressor replacement, the numbers change. A compressor on an older R-22 unit can cost almost as much as a new system once you add in the refrigerant. But a $200 capacitor on a seven-year-old unit? That is an easy decision. Fix it and move on.

We also see homeowners who have been told they need a full AC installation when the real issue is a refrigerant leak or a failing evaporator coil. A proper AC inspection can clarify that quickly. We offer free estimates so you can see the numbers before you decide anything. There is no pressure, and no salespeople push you toward the bigger job. Check out our San Antonio AC services page for more on what we offer.

If a repair provides another five good years, we will tell you that. It does not help anyone to replace a system that still has life left in it.

What Happens During Professional AC Installation

Most homeowners have never watched an AC installation from start to finish. That is fine. Knowing what to expect helps you plan your day and ask questions before work begins.

First, we protect your home. Drop cloths go down on floors and furniture near the work area. Then the old system comes out. We disconnect refrigerant lines, electrical wiring, and the existing air handler or furnace. The outdoor condenser also gets unhooked and removed. In San Antonio homes built before the 1990s, we often find old R-22 systems with corroded copper linesets. These usually need full replacement rather than reuse.

Once everything is cleared, the real work starts.

We size and position the new indoor unit, connect it to your ductwork, and run new refrigerant lines if the old ones are unsafe. The outdoor condenser is set on a level pad. Electrical connections go in next. Often, the existing electrical whip or disconnect box needs updating to match the new unit’s requirements. This is normal and not an upsell.

Steps You Will See on Installation Day

  1. Removal of old indoor and outdoor equipment.
  2. Inspection of existing ductwork for leaks or damage.
  3. Mounting and connecting the new air handler.
  4. Setting the outdoor condenser and running refrigerant lines.
  5. Wiring the thermostat and verifying electrical circuits.
  6. Charging the system with refrigerant and testing airflow at every register.

That last step is more important than people realize. We measure supply air temperature, return air temperature, and the difference between them. If the temperature split is not right, something is wrong. We do not leave until the numbers are correct. We also walk you through your new thermostat settings before we pack up.

A typical installation takes most of a day. Some jobs run longer if ductwork changes are needed or if attic access is tight. This often happens in older San Antonio homes with limited crawl spaces. We let you know the timeline upfront so there are no surprises.

Sizing, Permits, and Final Inspection Done Right

Getting the wrong size AC system is the most common mistake we see in San Antonio homes. If it is too small, it runs nonstop trying to keep up with 100-degree days. If it is too big, it short cycles, never removing enough humidity from the air. Both conditions waste energy and shorten equipment life.

A proper load calculation looks at your home’s square footage, insulation levels, window orientation, duct condition, and ceiling height. San Antonio’s houses range from 1950s-era homes with single-pane windows to newer construction with spray foam insulation. These two types of houses could be the same size but need very different systems. We run Manual J calculations on every AC installation because guessing based on square footage alone is wrong about half the time.

Then there is the permit. The City of San Antonio requires a mechanical permit for AC installation. A licensed contractor must pull this permit. The permit leads to a final inspection by a city inspector who checks refrigerant line connections, electrical wiring, condensate drainage, and whether the unit meets current code. Some homeowners ask why permits matter. Unpermitted work can cause problems when you sell your home. It can void equipment coverage and it skips the safety check that catches real hazards.

We pull the permit before any work starts. This prevents surprises.

During the final inspection, the city inspector confirms the disconnect box is visible from the outdoor unit. They also check that the condensate drain has a proper trap and the electrical circuit matches the equipment needs. We have seen installations done by others where the breaker size was wrong or the float switch was missing. These are the kinds of issues an inspection catches.

Homeowners often do not think about their ductwork. It matters as much as the new equipment. If your ducts leak or are undersized, even a perfectly sized system will not perform correctly. We check duct condition during every free estimate. Putting a new system on bad ducts is like putting new tires on a car with broken axles. As a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer and authorized Daikin Pro Dealer, we match equipment to your home’s actual needs. Our free estimates include the load calculation so you can see how we arrived at the recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about AC Installation in San Antonio

How long does AC installation take in San Antonio?

Most AC installations take one full day, from removal of the old unit to system startup. Your technician will test the new system before leaving to confirm it cools evenly. Homes with duct changes or electrical upgrades may need extra time. San Antonio’s older homes sometimes need updated wiring to handle a new system safely. Ask about your home’s setup during your free estimate so you know what to expect on install day.

What size AC unit do I need for my San Antonio home?

The right size depends on your home’s square footage, insulation, and window placement, not just a general chart. A unit that is too small will run constantly and struggle during our long summer season. One that is too big cools fast but leaves your home feeling damp and uneven. A proper load calculation looks at your specific house, not a one-size guess. This step matters more in San Antonio because of how many months your system runs each year.

How much does AC installation cost?

Cost depends on your home’s size, the equipment you choose, and any ductwork or electrical changes needed. Homes needing only a straight swap of equal-sized equipment usually cost less than homes needing duct repairs or upgraded wiring. Ask your technician what is driving your specific price during your estimate. A clear breakdown of labor, equipment, and any extra work helps you compare options and understand exactly what you are paying for before work starts.

Can I install a new AC during San Antonio’s hot summer months?

Yes, installation can happen any time of year, including peak summer. Many homeowners wait until their old system fails on a 100-degree day, which means going without cooling for part of the install day. Scheduling before summer, in early spring, avoids that gap and lets you skip the busiest weeks of our season. If your current system is over 10 years old and showing warning signs, planning ahead saves you from an emergency situation later.

What should I expect on the day of my AC installation?

Your technician will remove the old equipment, install the new system, and test it before leaving your home. This includes checking refrigerant levels, airflow, and thermostat settings to confirm everything runs correctly. Expect some noise and activity both indoors and near your outdoor unit for most of the day. Clear a path to your indoor equipment and outdoor unit beforehand so the crew can work efficiently without delays.

Do I need a permit for AC installation in San Antonio?

Yes, most AC installations in San Antonio require a permit before work begins. This confirms the new system meets current safety and electrical standards for your home. A licensed contractor typically handles the permit process as part of your installation. Skipping this step can create problems later, especially if you sell your home and a buyer’s inspector checks for proper permitting on major systems like AC equipment.
